Surface Laptop SE for Education – Microsoft UK

Background

Microsoft’s launch of the Surface SE took place in early 2022. The UK had been through multiple lockdowns and schools were desperate to reengage students and begin rebuilding the attainment lost during school disruptions.

Microsoft UK had a particularly tough road ahead. Despite a powerful, durable and affordable unit, with streamlined education-focusses OS, chronically underfunded schools couldn’t afford the new tech they needed, even if they wanted to.

Microsoft UK’s partner network features vendors that offer financial solutions, such as payment plans for schools, finance for parents, and donations from business to manage this. Therefore, the opportunity seemed to be through the Microsoft Education partners.

Where I came in

The Microsoft Surface UK team were preparing a webinar on the importance of 1:1 device learning. This is where every student has access to one device each, and multiple studies have shown that this approach increases attainment, self-esteem and even improves mental health for school students when compared to sharing devices.

Microsoft enlisted the help of Fifty Five and Five to promote this webinar, with assets such as a 1:1 learning eBook and infographic, with accompanying organic social and email campaigns.

These had to follow Microsoft’s brand guidelines closely, as they would be sent out by partners so needed to present Microsoft’s familiar TOV. Their goal was to drive interest in the Surface Laptop Pro, and position it as the logical choice for a new age of hybrid teaching and learning.
